The Psalm writer says we should store up God's word like treasure in our hearts. Jesus said that if His words remain in us, good things will happen. But memorizing is so hard in today's age of distraction. And why bother when we can look up Bible verses on our smart phones? Discussion Questions

Icebreaker question: What is the silliest, most frivolous, or most embarrassing thing you have committed to memory? (Song lyrics, nursery rhyme, limerick, high school girlfriend's phone number, whatever ...)

  1. What is your favorite memorized Bible verse? What makes it so special? Is it attached to a special occasion, does it come to your mind when you really need it, or something else?
  1. The spiritual disciplines include prayer, fasting, observing the Sabbath, Bible reading, meditation and memorization, to name a few. Which disciplines come easiest and which are harder for you?

    3.  In Matt's message this week, he spoke about the value of familiarizing yourself with scripture (memorizing it). In Joel's message a week ago, he spoke about how scriptures that are too familiar can be "a trap, a danger, and an enemy." How can we reconcile these two points of view? (Hint: Two things can be true at the same time.)

    4. The Gospels don't record that Jesus gave any commands or sermons about Bible memorization, but he clearly modeled it in his earthly ministry. What can we learn about this discipline from the Life of Jesus?
